We offer experiential learning techniques and activities in a range of our courses and development programmes because we know it creates long-lasting transformational change in people, leaders and teams.
Why experiential learning?
We introduced the idea of experiential learning into our programmes of leadership development, team building, training and coaching from the very beginning of Pro-Development over 10 years ago.
In these session people take part in ‘here and now’ experiences which may be outside their comfort zone, and we observe how people’s behaviour in practice differs from what they say they do. Feedback in the moment is very powerful and we encourage the whole group to take part in giving and receiving feedback. We have seen some incredible learning experiences through the outdoors even from as little as a gentle walk in the local area.
What is Experiential Learning all about?
Experiential learning is not about learning a new skill. It’s about learning how to connect to your mind (your ‘gut’, your emotions, and your thoughts) and instantaneously pull on yours and others’ resources and act appropriately in that moment.
Since the goal of experiential learning is to have individuals embody a new way of thinking, of seeing, of behaving and of acting in the face of uncertainty, successful experiential learning must invoke the mind-body connection through the following elements:
- Reflect: Reflect on key learning points.
- Challenge: Be challenged in a new way of thinking, seeing, believing.
- Do: Practice new actions that support that new learning point.
This is very much what coaching practice works upon and experiential learning can help us to deepen that mind-body connection through experiences.
