The power of praise lies in its ability to uplift, motivate, and inspire. By catching people when they do things well, we acknowledge their efforts and contributions, supporting a positive and productive environment. As described in our previous blog written by Joanne, words, intentions, and empathy in communication play a critical role in this process.
Genuine praise, delivered with intention and empathy, can transform relationships, boost morale, and create a culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to grow. In recognising the achievements of others, we not only build them up but also strengthen the foundations of a supportive and thriving workplace. A culture of praise allows for a culture of growth, open and honest conversations and conflict handling.
Here are some key aspects of the benefits of praise:
- Boosts self-esteem and confidence: praise reinforces positive self-perception, making individuals feel valued and capable, which boosts their self-esteem and confidence.
- Enhances motivation: recognising and appreciating efforts can motivate people to continue performing well and strive for further achievements.
- Promotes positive behaviour: praise encourages the repetition of desirable behaviours and can help shape positive habits and attitudes.
- Improves relationships: offering genuine praise can strengthen relationships by building trust, mutual respect, and a sense of appreciation.
- Increases engagement, productivity, and overall satisfaction nurturing a positive environment.
How to give great praise
- Be consistent: praise should be done as often as possible – the more often you take the time to offer praise for great work, the much easier it is to have the more difficult conversations when needed
- Be specific: describe specific actions or behaviours rather than giving general praise. This helps individuals understand exactly what they did well and why.
- Be sincere: ensure that praise is genuine and heartfelt. Insincere praise can be easily detected and may have the opposite effect. Refer to Joanne’s previous blog for further tips.
- Balance praise and feedback: we don’t just grow from praise, we also need the developmental feedback too to help promote continuous improvement while maintaining morale.
- Personalise praise: tailor your praise to the individual, considering their unique strengths and preferences and communication styles. This is where DiSC profiling can really help to identify preferred styles.
- Timing: offer praise promptly after the desired behaviour or achievement to reinforce the connection between the action and the positive reinforcement.
In summary, praise is a powerful tool that, when used effectively, can enhance individual and group performance, well-being, and relationships. Its impact is supported by various psychological theories and practical evidence across different settings.
If this is a skill that you feel you and your teams would benefit from developing or revisiting, then our 2-day Essentials of Management and our longer 6-month Inspiring Leadership Programmes can enhance and further support you and your teams to grow. The DiSC profiling we mention can also help as a team – if you know each other’s styles, you can improve how you offer praise and feedback to each other.
