Is your business Vision giving you clarity or blurring the issue for 2025?

A good Vision can be a guiding light to inspire and motivate people to take your business to the next level. It enables you to tell your story and drives sound business decisions in a world that is often complex and ambiguous to navigate. As we start the New Year, after our Christmas break, it’s the perfect time to take a pause and have a good look at your Vision and ask yourself if it’s fit for purpose and adding value. If not, perhaps it’s time for a re-write!

I recently joined Pro-Development inspired by our Vision:-

“To be the go to Employee Engagement and Development specialist in Yorkshire and the Humber working with businesses who care about their people and recognise the value in the work we do.”

I wanted to work at a great place with a clear Vision of what they do and where they are going. Having been here a couple of months, I’m pleased to say our Vision really does drive our business. We have high expectations of ourselves and high aspirations for our clients. We know what we are good at and continually seek to develop our expertise to assure our specialisms. We have a Vision that drives our relationships with clients, working ethos, and decision making. And, guess what? We all know it. It’s a great vision for us because it reflects our culture and values – making a difference, trusted, creative and vibrant.

So back to your Vision – does it clearly state what you are about and does it work for you and your teams? As businesses evolve so must their vision. Perhaps it’s been a while since you thought about yours. Here are some questions to ask yourself and your team:-

  1. Is your vision clear and easy to understand?
  2. Does it inspire and motivate your team and stakeholders?
  3. Is it aligned to your values and strategic goals?
  4. Does it reflect what you, uniquely, stand for?
  5. Is it realistic and reflective of your long term aspirations?

If you can answer yes to all of the above that’s great news. You have a great tool that will foster a sense of purpose and belonging in your organisation which, in turn, can lead to higher levels of retention and engagement. It can also help prioritise actions and allocate resources effectively which can be so helpful for many SME’s. If not, perhaps it’s time to pause again and think about what needs to change. We can help you start that conversation. Get in touch to talk about how we can help.

Do you need an objective sounding board, a coaching conversation and/or a focus day for your team. We have worked with many businesses on this in Yorkshire and the Humber. Sometimes starting with a blank sheet and sometimes dusting off the old, starting with what you have got and taking it from there to develop afresh. Always with the intention that we action plan how to embed the Vision and Values in the everyday operation, keeping them alive for the team not just sticking them up on the wall!

And what about those of you who have yet to clarify your Vision? The questions above can provide great prompts to kick-start the process. We would also recommend that you involve your team to ensure their commitment and include as many diverse perspectives as possible before deciding on a Vision statement for your business. We can help you plan that process and design a mixture of consultancy, coaching and team building to suit your outcomes and requirements, get in touch to explore how we can support you.

Engaging your colleagues is key. In their report “Help your employees find purpose or watch them leave” the global management consulting firm McKinsey wrote about the importance of helping your colleagues find and maintain a sense of purpose at work. The Vision is one key aspect of this, alongside the establishment of core values as mentioned in our previous blog “The importance of values.”

Employees expect their jobs to bring a significant sense of purpose to their lives. Employers need to help meet this need or be prepared to lose talent to companies that will. (McKinsey 2021)

As it becomes increasingly difficult and costly to build good client relationships and recruit good people we all need to ensure that we offer people inspiring reasons to stay with our business. A clear Vision helps provide that roadmap and a greater sense of purpose. You can then create people development plans that align and really make a difference. In our next blog Tracey will be looking at some great ideas and suggested actions for how best to do this.

In summary, alongside all of the benefits already mentioned, your Vision can provide the focus on long term success. It can help contribute to a more resilient approach when facing the shorter term challenges and will keep the focus and commitment for years to come.
