In today’s fast‑moving business landscape, many organisations struggle not because of a lack of talent or resources, but because their teams are pulling in different directions. Strategy may exist “on paper,” but without clear alignment, even the best plans lose momentum.
One of the most powerful levers for growth is ensuring that everyone, from leadership to front‑line teams, understands the big picture and more importantly, how their work contributes to it.
A few years ago, we worked with a fast‑growing company that was experiencing all the classic symptoms of misalignment: competing priorities, duplicated work, and constant fire‑fighting. Despite strong revenue growth, the business owner realised, “It feels like we’re rowing hard, but not necessarily in the same direction.”
To diagnose the problem, we brought together all the leaders from sales, product, and operations for a strategy workshop. It quickly became clear that each team had its own interpretation of the company’s broader goals. Sales was focused on short‑term numbers. Product was pursuing long‑term innovation and operations were dealing with the fallout from both. Everyone was working hard, but not together.
This reminded me of a story I once heard about a rowing team consisting of eight athletes, each strong and capable, but losing races because they weren’t synchronised. The coach told them, “If each person pulls their hardest at their own rhythm, the boat goes nowhere. But if you match pace, even with slightly less individual effort, you win.”
That analogy changed the room.
We used it as the foundation for a new alignment process to
- Clarify the destination (the strategic priorities)
- Define the rhythm (how each team contributes to those priorities)
- Set the cadence (shared goals, rituals, and collaboration points)
- Measure progress together, not in isolated silos
Within six months, the company saw faster project delivery, stronger cross‑team relationships, and a clear increase in customer satisfaction. Not because anyone worked harder but because they finally worked in harmony.
The lesson is simple. Organisational growth doesn’t come from intensity, it comes from alignment. When teams understand the big picture and see how their efforts connect to the strategy, they stop rowing in circles and start moving forward fast.
