Ah July, when growth is very much evidential in the garden, beautiful flowers, vegetables, and weeds – oh yes, let’s not forget the weeds. So, what’s growing in your garden and in your team? At Pro-Development we know how important it is to look after your team and grow managers… Here’s a few hints and tips how to help your Managers grow strong, stand tall and shine bright 😊

| Choose the sunflower you want to sow. | Identify individuals who are ready to grow |
| Make sure the ground is well raked and free of weeds. | Have a conversation with the individual about the role of a leader and their specific development needs. |
| Make some holes 10 cm apart, 12mm deep. | Provide the time and space needed for the growth they seek. |
| Sow the seed, cover with soil and water gently. Fingers crossed for sun a-blazing! | Share knowledge and provide learning experiences. Why not try our First Line Manager 6-month programme – it will be amazing 😉 |
| Thin out the sunflowers to 45cm apart and watch them grow up a mile! | Tailor development to suit individual needs and style. |
| Protect the seedlings from slugs and a snail! | Coach and guide to overcome challenges and help them prevail. |
| Provide support by placing a cane near the stem. | Provide support through regular 1:1 conversations with them. |
| Watch them grow and harvest the seeds! | Our first line manager and Leadership development programmes will meet all your business needs! |
Were you trained in leadership and management before you were given responsibility to manage others? We come across many who are not, it’s such a missed opportunity but receiving that training whenever it comes is so refreshing and confidence boosting. It’s so good to celebrate what we are doing well and identify where we can improve to be even better. It gives us confidence in our roles and the skills needed to better understand and manage others too.
We’ve been working with a number of First Line Managers and Future Leaders on our programmes here ranging from one day workshops like the People Management Fundamentals and the 6-month inspiring leaders’ programme and have found that one of the most difficult transitions for leaders to make is the shift from doing to leading. We often find that newly promoted first line managers keep hold of many of the technical day to day work they did previously yet doing so adds to their workload and prevents them from devoting quality time to their managerial team tasks and then the team miss out.
Do you have some new or existing managers you want to invest in, grow and develop further to become more skilled and help their own teams to shine. Then these programmes are perfect. We’re delighted to be welcoming bookings for our 6-month First Line Manager programme and 7-month experiential Leadership Development programme both starting in September 2022.
You may be eligible for funding if you are an SME in York, North Yorkshire or the East Riding which provides 40% towards the cost of any investment. If you would like to find out if you are eligible, we can work through this with you. And, if you want more information on the programmes, you can click here to read about both programmes.
The learning doesn’t stop at the end of the programme though, does it? Again, we can see a similarity when growing sunflowers… as you can see from our photo, there comes a time when a sunflower needs a bigger environment because they’ve outgrown the pot they were in. When you are ‘re-positioned’ or shall we say ‘promoted’, its good on so many levels but can also feel disorientating and maybe overwhelming. We must encourage ourselves if this happens though, it’s simply a transition, its ok if we don’t look instantly pretty and confident in our new role, we’re simply getting used to our new environment! We all get growing pains, yet with the right nurturing leadership and the best growing culture in the soil, we’ll soon settle in, start growing again and shine!
Just like our sunflowers in the Great Giant Sunflower Grow-Off 2022. How are yours doing?
