How to Create a Winning Training and Development Plan for 2025

A new year isn’t just for setting personal resolutions and getting clarity on your Vision as Sue O’boyle talked about in our last blog - it’s also the perfect time to plan how you’ll develop and support your people. Once you have a clear vision that provides a roadmap and a sense of purpose for your team, you will need to think about upskilling and developing your people to meet those needs. We do quite a lot of work with businesses on talent and succession planning and having a robust Training and Development Plan and Budget.

Training and development aren’t just ‘nice-to-haves’ they’re essential for building skills, boosting morale and keeping your team engaged. But where do you start?

We are always here to support you on this with some consultancy or just a chat to get you started.

Here are some simple, actionable steps to create a Training and Development plan that works, starting of course with pause and reflect:

Review Last Year’s Efforts

Before looking ahead, make time in your diary to pause and reflect. What training did your team complete last year? What worked well, and what could have been improved? If you’re not sure, ask them, gather feedback from employees to understand their experiences and uncover areas for growth.

Identify Key Development Areas

Think about your business goals for the year. (You have got them right? If not, we can help gather your thinking and through consultancy and coaching we can help you identify them). What skills or knowledge will your team need to achieve them? Whether it’s leadership development, technical skills, or improving team dynamics, align your training and development priorities with your strategic objectives.

Set a Budget

Let’s talk numbers. Training is an investment, so carve out a realistic budget for the year. Often clients trust us to explore the outcomes they are looking to achieve, outline bespoke solutions that are tailored to the business landscape and we can share some rough ideas of the investment needed to input into the budget process.

Consider costs for workshops, leadership programmes, online courses, and coaching sessions, but don’t forget to factor in the time your team will need to dedicate to learning too.  It’s important to support them with time to get the best out of any training when they get back to the office. Think about having a back to work discussion about how they are going to implement any learning back in the work place.

By investing in training and development, businesses can ensure they have the ability to grow their talent, stay competitive, and retain their employees.

  • 76% of employees are more likely to stay with a company that offers continuous training
  • 55% say they need additional training to perform better in their roles

Mix It Up

A vibrant training programme is one that combines different methods. Think beyond traditional classroom sessions and incorporate experiential learning with practical activity based methods. Include hands-on activities, mentoring opportunities, and virtual learning. Variety keeps learning engaging and accessible for everyone. We’re happy to help in all these respects with Vibrant being one of our core values!

Make It a Team Effort

Get your team involved in the planning process. Ask for their input on what they’d like to learn or where they feel they need support. When employees feel invested in their development, they’re more likely to engage with the opportunities you offer and be overall more engaged.

Track Progress and Adjust

Set measurable goals for your training initiatives and regularly check in to see how they’re progressing. Flexibility is key—if something isn’t working, tweak it to better meet your team’s needs.
