Conversations, Conflict and the King

As our new King settles into the rhythm of doing ‘Kingy’ things, I’m sure he will be relying on his team to support and guide him. No doubt, this team will be made up of new people and people who served under his mum, our late Queen.

And when preparing to write this blog, it came to mind that honest conversations, conflict and dysfunctional teams are all common challenges for all leaders and managers whether they are Royalty, responsible for a whole nation or individuals looking after a handful of employees in their business. And for teams to become high performing, these obstacles need to be overcome (much more productive than just declaring “off with their head!”).

Fortunately, with the right approach, these issues can be addressed and managed effectively.

Honest conversations are essential for any successful team. When team members are comfortable enough to have honest conversations with each other, they can openly discuss issues, share ideas, and work together to come up with creative solutions.

As a leader it is important to create an environment where team members feel comfortable speaking their minds and are not afraid to disagree with each other. This can be done by setting clear goals and expectations, fostering an open dialogue, and actively listening to team members.

Conflict is an unavoidable part of any team. As a leader it is important to recognise when conflict arises and address it quickly. A good starting point is to provide team members with the skills and resources they need to resolve conflicts on their own.

This can include conflict resolution techniques, such as active listening and finding common ground. If conflicts cannot be resolved on their own, it is important to facilitate a constructive conversation that encourages team members to work together to come up with a mutually beneficial solution.

Dysfunctional teams can be a major obstacle for leaders. The first step in addressing this issue is to identify the root cause of the dysfunction. Is it a lack of communication, a lack of trust, or a lack of shared goals? Once the root cause is identified, it is important to take steps to address it. This can include setting clear expectations, providing team members with the resources they need to do their jobs, and fostering a culture of collaboration and trust.

In our previous blog Tracey talks about it being lonely at the top, but if we keep talking to our people by having honest conversations, managing conflicts, and addressing dysfunctional teams, leaders can ensure that their teams are successful and productive. With the right approach, these issues can be effectively managed, and the whole team can reach their goals.

If this is a challenge you relate to, we run workshops on honest conversations, team building and high performing teams’ workshops and we would love to roll out the red carpet and welcome you.  So, get in touch and come and have a cuppa and chat and we can talk through what’s keeping you awake at night.  We promise that we can be a good listening ear and will often have a solution to help.
