Celebrating Success with a bang!

As we’ve been celebrating bonfire night and fireworks this month, it got us thinking about celebrating success with our teams – that this should be as amazing as the illuminating sparkly fireworks rather than a half-lit Catherine wheel or a tippled over roman candle.
We all know that thanking people for doing a good job or for going that extra mile is the right thing to do – but do we always celebrate those successes in the right way?

How do you support your pocket rockets – talent management, succession planning

So, you have managed to hire an absolute gem, a person perfect for growing with your business, you can see the possible potential, now what do you do? How do you get those pocket rockets powering through the organisation with their pace and energy and develop their potential brightness?

There’s nothing worse than a rocket on bonfire night that doesn’t go off with a bang and create something bright and colourful in the sky.

Is your team dynamite or damp gunpowder?

I love this time of year especially bonfire night where we all wrap up and celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes blowing up the House of Lords in 1605. We all know who Guy Fawkes was, but there was a whole team of conspirators that fateful night that eventually ended up being captured, tortured, and eventually executed (although Guy Fawkes died by falling from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck). It’s kind of odd that we celebrate failure of teamwork year after year when at all other times it’s the one thing we want to improve on!

These are how some of the greatest stories start. Stories that inspire and teach, touch our emotions, grab our attention and help us to understand humanity. Stories have brought us together for thousands of years. There is no doubt that storytelling is powerful – that words are powerful.

The Fear of Learning

My academic prowess knew no bounds until the autumn of 1992. It was at this point that I attempted to make the shift from GCSEs to A-Levels. It was a swift and uncomfortable journey to disappointment.

Feel the fear and do it anyway

If someone were to ask you “Are you fearful?”, how would you answer? It’s a surprise when some situations bring fear up in us. It is how we handle/respond to that fear that is the key to our success!  I was privileged to go through our Leadership Development Programme and thought I would share some snippets of what it taught me.

Is every day a school day?

As the children return to school the nights are drawing in, the leaves are turning with conkers in plentiful supply. To me as a farmer’s daughter this marks the end of the farming year – we take stock of the harvest and what we have achieved – we learn from our mistakes and we plan what investments we need to make now, which areas of land we need to do more work on – to nurture and top up with nutrients to ensure that we are in the best place possible to flourish next spring and in turn be more profitable.

CPD isn’t just for professional bodies…it’s an open door

Anyone who is a member of a professional body is likely to have CPD (Continued Professional Development) requirements set out for them by the body, usually Finance, Law and HR sectors to name a few. It’s not always driven by the employer; they simply have to create the environment which allows it to happen
